It follows one man's journey from naive dog owner to seasoned guardian—through the painful lessons of a beloved German Shepherd named Dolph, whose aggression and eventual loss taught him that love alone is never enough. This book is part memoir, part comprehensive guide, offering an unflinching look at what it really means to be worthy of a dog's trust. Our journey with Dolph inspired us to share this story, emphasizing the critical importance of proper guidance and understanding for our canine companions.
Lessons learned and wisdom gained
Dolph wasn't a bad dog; there's no such thing. He was a good dog that became dangerous because we didn't know how to guide him. He was doing exactly what guardian breeds are born to do. We just never taught him how. Or from whom. The tragedy isn't that he failed us. The tragedy is that we failed him first. But here's what we've learned in the years since: failure doesn't have to be the end of the story. We can carry those failures into the future as wisdom rather than guilt. We can let them shape us into better guardians for the dogs who come after. We can honor what we lost by becoming what we should have been all along.
